Ambrosini critical of Pioli’s derby approach: “This team is not made to play this type of football”

By Oliver Fisher -

Massimo Ambrosini was not impressed with the way that AC Milan approached the derby with Inter last night and more specifically with Stefano Pioli’s instructions.

Pioli raised some eyebrows with his team selection as he reverted to a 3-5-2 formation with Rafael Leao dropped to the bench, Divock Origi and Olivier Giroud up front together plus Junior Messias as a box-to-box midfielder.

It would be safe to say that the experiment did not work at all, with the Nerazzurri dominating the first 45 minutes and possibly having been unlucky to only go in a goal up. A recovery of sorts came in the second half, but there were zero shots on target from Milan.

Speaking to the microphones of DAZN, Ambrosini touched on the difficult moment that the team are experiencing and about the way that Pioli chose to approach the derby with Inter, with his reports relayed by SempreMilan.it.

“Milan has always clung to its own ideas. The moment is extremely complicated: they thought they could stem a certain situation but the first half was clear enough. This team is not made to play this type of football,” he said.

“The initial idea was to limit the difficulties of the previous matches. The first half was clear in Inter’s favour, Milan wanted to build density but in truth there were many spaces for the Nerazzurri. In the second half they felt a reaction of pride but they didn’t get there much from Onana’s side.”

  1. 3 defenders always tend to more defensive. I think just add more more mid, not defenders.

Thats why 4-3-1-2 is the best option.

    3 mid : Tonali, Bennacer, Krunic/Pobega.
    1 Trequartista : CDK.
    2 Strikers : Giroud & Leao.
