Ambrosini praises Milan duo after Lukaku battle but ‘demands more’ from midfielder

Massimo Ambrosini was full of praise for two AC Milan defenders who started last night’s win against AS Roma at San Siro, but he believes that there is a midfielder who can do more.

Milan secured a very important three points on Sunday night, beating Roma 3-1 to consolidate third place. They took the lead early on through Yacine Adli, who scored his first goal for the club with a lovely shimmy and a well-guided shot inside the bottom corner.

Olivier Giroud made it 2-0 early in the second half, as he had the simple task of heading in from close range after Simon Kjaer’s nod back across goal, but Leandro Paredes halved the deficit from the penalty spot.

Theo Hernandez’s rocket in off the crossbar after Giroud’s flick sealed the win in the final 10 minutes. The result means that the Rossoneri took advantage of Bologna and Fiorentina’s slip-ups earlier in the day, which pads the lead to nine points to fifth place.

Ambrosini was part of the DAZN panel for the game between Milan and Roma last night, with his comments via MilanNews, and he began by praising Matteo Gabbia and Simon Kjaer for winning the battle with Romelu Lukaku.

“Gabbia and Kjaer held him well , they only suffered a little at the end. They also held him well in a physical duel,” he said.

Ambrosini was then asked what he thought about Milan’s midfield, given it is an area he knows well having played in the middle of some of the great sides of the 2000s.

“In the last two games two midfielders have scored: Loftus-Cheek in Empoli and Adli against Roma. You can’t just think about relying on the attackers, Milan also need goals from the midfielders.

“Adli and Reijnders did well. However, I continue to demand more from Loftus-Cheek for the physique he has. If you want to raise the bar, it is reasonable to expect more from those who have that power in their engine.”
