Massimo Ambrosini left AC Milan at the end of the 2012-23 season after spending 18 years at the club. In a recent interview, he revealed that he was more or less forced out of the club.
Ambrosini was the captain of the Rossoneri in the 2012-13 season and made a total of 25 appearances. At the end of the season, his contract expired and Milan decided not to renew it, which promoted his move to Fiorentina.
Speaking to Radio Serie A, as cited by MilanNews, Ambrosini revealed that he never expected to leave the Rossoneri after that season. He wanted to stay and reach 500 appearances, being just eight away at 492.
“They told me about the exit in two moments. We had just won against Siena and we had qualified for the Champions League. The next day I went on holiday and Galliani called. For me, it was inconceivable that I would leave Milan. Then he told me that Cristante was going to play more.
“After two weeks of yes and no, I was on the seaside in Pesaro and I received the call from Galliani who told me “Look Massimo…”. I was very sad, I finished with 492 appearances and my dream was to reach 500, I couldn’t see myself anywhere else,” he stated.
Ambrosini retired after the 2013-14 season and currently, he works as a pundit for DAZN. Regardless of how his journey at the club came to an end, he will always be an important player in the history of Milan (12 major honours, including two UCLs and four Scudetti).
