Raimondo on Milan’s profit in 2022-23 and ‘player trading’ mercato approach

AC Milan have made six signings so far this summer and the new management has been praised for the work. All made possible by the positive result in 2022-23 and Sandro Tonali’s sale.

Thanks to their run in the Champions League, as well as the continuous improvements on the commercial front, Milan made a profit in the financial year of 2022-23. It’s the first time they have ended in the green since 2006, which says a lot.

This also meant that Gerry Cardinale was able to sanction a budget of around €50m (excluding sales) for this summer mercato. A budget that was significantly increased by the sale of Tonali to Newcastle, of course.

On our Substack, we interviewed the lawyer and financial expert Felice Raimondo about the financial situation of Milan. He shared his thoughts on the positive result of 2022-23 as well as the new player trading approach on the mercato.

How much does it help Milan on the mercato?

“Surely from a ‘Player Trading’ point of view, being able to count on additional revenue of €60m will allow you to invest a lot more in targeted player signings, even more than what has been collected.”

The financial year of 2022/23 was very positive for Milan, do you think they can continue on this path in the future (near break-even or even a profit)?

“I think so, even if it’s true that Milan’s economic results still depend a lot on sporting success on the pitch. So in the future, a season without the Champions League will inevitably have a negative effect, lowering the revenue which in any case has to grow more, especially when talking about commercial and merchandising revenue,” Raimondo concluded.
