AC Milan have provided a statement to a journalist who covers Newcastle United and suggested the club must have known about Sandro Tonali’s gambling addiction before selling him.
Craig Hope of the Daily Mail is one of the journalists who has (repeatedly) asked if Milan knew anything about Tonali placing bets on games involving the Rossoneri and what the repercussions of that could be.
Sections of Newcastle fans have been demanding they explore legal options, but The Athletic recently addressed the claims that Newcastle could void the deal in some way, or that they are owed compensation, or might get out of paying the full €70m transfer fee agreed with Milan.
According to Fabrizio Romano, AC Milan issued a statement to Craig Hope on developments regarding Tonali and the vague speculation about potential legal action from Newcastle.
“We first learnt about Tonali’s gambling addiction through media reports, what we know is only what we read. We don’t know anything else,” it read.
Tonali has been banned from playing any football for 10 months while he will have a further eight months of counselling in addition to that after he bet on Milan games.
