In the 16th minute of the clash between AC Milan and Bologna, play was halted to raise awareness for the struggles that the world of football still has with racism. San Siro was lit up with phone flashlights in the stands, making for a strong message.
Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan was the subject of racial abuse during the Rossoneri’s game against Udinese last week. As a result, continuing their already extensive work on the matter, Milan decided to send a message during the game against Bologna last night.
In the 16th minute, referring to Maignan’s shirt number, play was halted for around a minute as the fans in the stands lit up the stadium. A quote from Martin Luther King Jr. was also displayed on the big screen: “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that.”
The game finished 2-2 after a late equaliser by Bologna, but Milan at least extended their unbeaten run in the league. Frosinone are up next and the Rossoneri will need to bounce back with a win. Not just for the standings, but also for their confidence.
