It is no secret now that AC Milan are pursuing Alessandro Buongiorno of Torino as their search for a centre-back continues, and his former coach believes he is ready for the step up.

In your opinion, is Buongiorno ready for a top club like Milan?
“From this point of view there is no doubt. More than anything, you have to be inside his head to understand what he really wants: to become a bandiera at Torino or to join a top-tier club? He alone is in a position to decide.”
In what aspects has it improved the most in the recent period?
“Buongiorno is very physical, in recent times he has accentuated this characteristic a lot. He has also improved a lot in the short term, in terms of speed.
“Once upon a time, attackers with the characteristics of Raspadori or Retegui could have put him in difficulty: he eliminated them easily, as if nothing had happened.”
On a tactical level, can Buongiorno play as in a three and a four-man defence?
“Buongiorno has always been very intelligent tactically. I feel like saying, today, that he can cover all the roles in the defensive department. He can play centrally or as the wider player in a three-man – and he has already done it – as well as in a four.
Where do you prefer him?
“Central defender, on the right or left, in a four-man defence.”
You know him personally, from your point of view what decision do you think he will make?
“It’s normal that, sooner or later, big clubs like Milan, Inter and Juventus would be interested in a player like him. Without being obvious, however, I say that it really all depends on what Buongiorno feels and what he wants to do with his career. No one can put themselves in his place.”
Speaking of defenders, Inter’s Francesco Acerbi named a former and a current Milan player among the hardest opponents he has faced.
