A number of players left AC Milan during the summer transfer window via loan formulas, and there is over €40m riding on how the next few months go.
The headline exits were probably Alexis Saelemaekers and Charles De Ketelaere given they went to clubs within Serie A after tough 2022-23 seasons with Milan, however there are several others concerned. Calciomercato.com have broken down each situation.
Charles De Ketelaere: He went to Atalanta on a €3m paid loan with an option to buy set at €23m plus €4m in bonuses and a 10% resale clause. Gian Piero Gasperini gave him confidence and the start was positive with two goals and two assists.
His performance level then dropped with an injury too, but Atalanta’s idea is to insist on this gamble and a permanent signing remains a real option. It is possible the clubs will negotiate to review the conditions.
Alexis Saelemaekers: The winger headed to Bologna on a €500k paid loan with a €9m option to buy. The Belgian has relaunched himself with Thiago Motta and would gladly remain in Regio-Emilia.
The Rossoblù are not ruling that idea out, and as end of the season approaches their sporting director Sartori will attempt negotiate with Milan to lower the price for the permanent purchase.
Junior Messias: The Brazilian join Genoa on €500k paid loan with an obligation to buy upon the occurrence of certain conditions set at €2.5m. Muscle injuries have so far affected his experience in Liguria (only four appearances).
Despite this, the problems seem to be behind him and the Brazilian wants to contribute to the Grifone’s relaunch. The obligation to buy comes into force once Genoa mathematically achieve survival.
Divock Origi: Joined Nottingham Forest on loan with an option to buy fixed at €4.5m. His return to the Premier League has not gone as expected and he has so far failed to carve out a leading role in a struggling team.
The idea of a permanent move is complicated at the moment, because Forest’s difficulties (they could soon change manager) and the striker’s €4m net per season salary point more towards a return to Milan.
Daniel Maldini: He transferred to Empoli on loan with a €5m option to buy and a buy-back in Milan’s favour at €6m. A muscle problem kept him out of action until the end of October, now he is regaining confidence on the pitch and getting more playing time.
The figure for the permanent deal is high, but at the moment it is too early for the assessments by the Tuscan club who could well see players in his role like Tommaso Baldanzi leave.
If Maldini was some young Belgian or Turk Milan would spend a fortune on him.
Maldini has shown very little aside from being injury prone. Haven’t followed him closely but from what I have seen, he is at best a lower-level Serie A team benchwarmer.
The fact Furlani loaned Daniel with option to buy and not dry loan after Maldini got fired is enough proof that Furlani is a fkin joke.
Ignoring the fact that there is a buyback clause insterted as well keeping him under Milan’s control while incentivizing Empoli to develop/play him. Your argument completely collapses there.
What is the incentive of a club to develop someone and make 1M€? 😀 In which universe?
Can’t tell if you are being sarcastic or not. 1 million euros to train and play a player who you think can contribute and would want to acquire regardless is plenty of incentive, particularly for a smaller club like Empoli. According to Transfermarkt, their squad’s entire transfer value is 90 million euros which further supports the value of 1 million euros to a club like them.
Also, Lecce literally trained, developed and played Colombo for 1 million.
Lecce had the option to buy out Colombo for 2.5 mil and Milan had the buyback option for 3.5 mil which they obviously exercised.

Maldini , CDK and Alexis could still be very useful to the club in years to come, Maldini is developing slowly I watch two recent Empoli matches, even physically he has developed now he needs to be consistent, CDK and Alexis had the misfortune of having Pioli as coach, who continues to kill off any good players in the team, last season when we were playing a back 3, Alexis was very very good at that position, all of a sudden Pioli decides to bench him, and put a one trick left footed player where that sort of system requires a right footed player on the right, Messias played ahead of him, and it was the same story , Messias was always bad, this itself would have affected Alexis , right now he is playing well at Bologna, with this new system he can play on either flank, or even in a midfield 3, were his intelligence , skill would be good, he hapowns to be a technical lad.
CDK on the other hand has the potential to be in this team, Pioli should have given him more hope and time, these 3 players Maldini, CDK and Alexis could be very good additions next season we hopefully have a coach who finally understands what he is doing…
Junior scored important goals for us buddy, and so far the 35m spent on Chuk is looking like a bust, at least Junior scored +5 goals each season. That’s more than what I can say for some of these guys. If Gasperini can’t get Charles to work then I’m afraid he’s reached his ceiling, also Maldini hasn’t shown the growth that’s expected of him, unlike guys like Colombo who has shown growth every season so far. Origi is Origi, he scored less than 30 league goals in his entire 8 years at Liverpool so that was always going to happen.
You should have added few more millions when you wrote about the money Milan spent on Chukwueze.
Chukwueze cost Milan 20 million with potential bonuses of 8 mil who are based on team and individual accomplishments.
Bonuses are not guaranteed.
