When experts compile their list of managers to look out for with a bright future, Thiago Motta’s name is almost always included.
Calciomercato.com report how Motta’s Bologna, seventh in the table with 32 points and fully in the fight for a Champions League place, are playing intense but also cohesive football, following the philosophy of their coach who won plenty in his career.
The match this evening at San Siro will pit Bologna against Milan and it could be a watershed between the present and the future – not only for the important points that are up for grabs, but also for the showcase that the game offers to Motta.
Stefano Pioli’s future will be evaluated between now and the end of the season, but Motta is one of the names in the running if he needs to be replaced, as we revealed over a month ago.
What does Motta think about Pioli’s management? He said something interesting about the meeting back in round one, which the Rossoneri won 2-0.
“Of all those played, the first match against Milan is one of the few in which I didn’t have the feeling of being able to win,” he said.
“They’re one of the teams that are a candidate for the Scudetto, they always start very strong. On Saturday we will have to try to impose our game, trying to be determined on what we will propose.”
So far the balance is two victories for Pioli, a draw and a victory for Thiago Motta (the 1-2 at San Siro when Messias had a goal disallowed). As a player, Motta’s record against Milan was four wins, a draw and two defeats.
As mentioned, Motta has ended up in the sights of many big clubs for next season, from Barcelona to Juventus, both Milan clubs and others around Europe.
Motta knows this and, probably, if he decided to leave Bologna (he only has a contract until 30 June 2024) he would be spoiled for choice. Tonight could be an audition at his future home.
1. Pioli “So you’re trying to replace me with this guy?”
2. Milan 5 – 1 Bologna. Pioli masterclass!
3. Furlani “link Pioli’s job to every coach we have left to play the rest of the season”
4. Milan go undefeated rest of the season…
LMAO!!!
