CM: Stature is a key factor in Milan deciding which striker they will target

By Euan Burns -

AC Milan want their next striker to have impressive stature like Olivier Giroud does which influences which players they are pursuing over the course of the season, a report claims.

As has been reported by Calciomercato.com, Milan want a certain stature of forward and one of the players on the market that fits the bill is RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko.

The 20-year-old stands at 1.94 metres tall and he has managed to score six goals in 12 appearances so far this season for the Bundesliga side.

He has been tracked by Milan in the past when Paolo Maldini met with his agent, prior to move from RB Salzburg to Leipzig.

It would not be an easy move from a financial perspective, as he would likely cost no less than €45-50 million. The figures discussed before were more in the region of €20m, but he has improved at Leipzig.

Premier League teams such as Arsenal and Chelsea are also in the frame, but Sesko is not the only striker of this profile that Milan are looking at, with 4-5 potential targets reported.

      1. I’d loooooooooooooove to see Milan play with 2 strikers. They’d need to go shopping first but who cares. Milan’s CF has been way too lonely for years now.

      2. personally i’ve always hated the 3-5-2 formation so i wont support that notiion but sure if we can afford 100mil for both why not 😀

  1. Could have signed Scamacca for a song relative to what he can do.

He’s started 5 games this season for a return of 5 goals (he scored for Italy against England) and 2 assists (it was his run and pass that set up the Lookman goal against Genoa but Lookman miss hit it first time) and put another 2 marginal offside into the back of the net.

And we already had the proven form line of 16 goals in his first full season of Serie A / physical maturity for a 22 year old who is 196cm.

Playing for fouls at the start of the Empoli game aside, his hold up play and distribution has been fantastic. He has so many shots but he still drops back almost like a 10 / Harry Kane to orchestrate build ups.

    1. Are you kidding? He played 7 games and scored only in 2. This is the standard Scamacca, exactly like it was in that season. Most games he is not going to score, some games he will score 2 or 3 goals and in the end look like he was good all around. He is not proven in anything, and it also worth nothing he scores most of his goals against teams from the bottom. What a striker. Thankfully there was no one stupid enough at Milan to go for him. Dude that has 24 goals in past 2 seasons. Drop it, Milan needs a better striker, not could be deadwood.

      1. He was coming off of injuries so those “games” he played esp early on was him getting back up to fitness. But his goals to minutes ratio is good. Almost a goal per 90min. Ground for instance is higher at 97min.per goal. So you sort of have to weight that up. Also his game suits our setup and he’s younger. And he’s been pretty good at holding up and distributing the ball from what I’ve seen from his games

        1. What? In which universe Scamacca has 1 goal per 90 minutes? You mean in these 7 games? What about last season, even the one before, when he was “good”. He scored 16 goals in under 10 matches, what did he do for the other 25? NOTHING. Against which teams did he score this year? NOT A SINGLE GOOD TEAM. He is like Reijnders, poor man’s version of a good player. Anyway, Giroud also had a goal per 90 minutes at one point this season…

          1. I don’t know about last season but I can check. The first few games he played there were few minutes here or there and then he got a hammy injury and then came back the last few games. So yea the minutes were low compared to the output. So in this universe he has a goal per minute 😂😂😂
All you see is 7 and 2. It actually 7 games, 4 goals , 1 assist. That’s pretty good. Strikers need that confidence regardless of where the goals come. Then there’s also the actual playing style…and he suits our game. Check out the games from time to time 🙂

        2. Just to add. Comparing someone to 38 year old Giroud and being similar is somehow a good thing is just beyond any belief. Imagine someone close to footballing retirement is around your level and you are supposed to be in the best footballing age. Proves my point, thankfully Milan didn’t get him.

          1. Giroud is a class striker. While he’s still good he’s also aging. That’s more the primary point. It would be good to search for such a striker now than when Giroud breaks down, no?. Giroud hasnt scored more than 16 in the big leagues, Scamacca has already and he has many years to come. It’s unfair to compare a complete career against someone who is in the early stages.

            Since you asked for it(domestic)
            Scamacca 2020/21: 1 goal per 169mins
            21/22: 1 goal per 134 mins
            22/23: 1 goal per 309 mins
            23/24: 1 goal per 92 mins

            Giroud
            202/21: 1 goal per 187 mins
            21/22: 1 goal per 173 mins
            22/23: 1 goal per 165 mins
            23/24: 1 goal per 98 mins

So basically Scamacca has a better return per minute bar the 22/23 season at West Ham domestically. Factor in his goals in cups and Europe it comes up to about 1 goal per168 mins

      2. So you just ignore that he was injured ? How is he supposed to score if he is in the hospital ? This season in Seria A he has 7games 4goals and 1assist. He practicly contributes a goal per game.

        1. And you ignore facts, against which teams did he score? He scored only in 2 games. Empoli and Monza, 2 goals in each, and asisst. From 7 games he wasn’t in 5, like he wasn’t there, whatever you say. You don’t need Scamacca for that, Colombo can score and contribute against teams like that. MILAN DOESN’T NEED MORE MEDIOCRE PLAYERS THAT CAN’T PLAY AGAINST TOP TEAMS AND DEFENDERS. You already saw what we got this year, trashing by PSG and Inter. Now you want another player that is useless for 50% of the games. Great. Even in his “best” season, and that is 16 goals in 36 games, is ridiculous for a player that you want to be the Milan first striker.

          1. If some one is ignoring facts and just cherry picking that’s def you. So now goals against smaller teams dont count for Scamacca cause that suits you ? Acording to your logic Halland is not good either cause he couldnt score against Inter either lol. How many goals would he have if you ignore the goals against the smal teams? Its normal that most goals strikers score will be against smaller teams. Like it or not Scammaca rating is 1 goal per ruffly 90min. He didnt even played full 7 games. He played for 366min which is 4 games and he scored 4 goals + 1assist during that time. Also his hold up game is perfect for Milan and he was afordable.

          2. Dude, Haaland scores against anyone. Mbappe also, I can move on and give you more top players that do that, Scamacca is an average player, same as Reijnders. They are both good against below average players, against good players – BIG 0.

        2. You all seem to be eager to collect this deadwood that can play against Empoli or Spezia. Why? Kids should play those games and Milan needs players that can play seriously against PSG, Inter, Juventus etc.

      3. Mate, read the post before wasting your time answering something different.

How many games has Scamacca started this season?

What are his numbers in those games?

I’ll give you a hint, it’s in my post.

I can’t produce a statistic but I’d love to know what percentage of players score off the bench, in the last 20-30 minutes of a game with any regularity.

To address one of the non-points you made, he scored against Milan, Inter, Napoli and Fiorentina in 21/22.

I don’t care what happened last year. It’s not relevant. He wasn’t fit for more than half the season.

I also don’t care what heppend before 21/22. Have a look at the numbers Luca Toni and Vieri put up at 22 and under, as just 2 examples.

        1. Under 22? He is 24. 25 soon. With 50 goals in career. I also don’t care that you think he is a good player, he is not and never will be a Milan player. THANKFULLY.

  2. I’m not saying this about Sesko, but I’m so sick of having slow, immobile strikers. Between Higuain, Piatek, Kalinic, Ibra, Giroud it’s been the best part of 10 years since we actually had a mobile on like Bacca. Give Okafor a shot

  3. Another player I’m keeping a close eye on is Lorenzo Lucca.

Relevant here because when it comes to stature they don’t really get any bigger. He’s 201cm.

But he’s definitely not a player whose record you can rely on.

First point: it’s his first season of Serie A and he turned 23 about a month ago. The taller the player, the slower the burn.

He caught my eye because he is so big yet, mobile and technical. In terms of his speed, I think he could outsprint Pulisic on the counter, perhaps with not quite the same acceleration. He’s like Beto in the sense that those giant strides eat up turf.

His game is growing by the week. His hold up and aerial play, as you’d expect, is really good but so is the quality of his distribution and vision. He’s not much of dribbler though his ball control is good enough even in tight.

I think the temptation is to look at Lucca and think he’s a bit of a novelty act like Peter Crouch was (with all due respect). At his size he’s much more Scamacca with genuinely good technical ability (though not quite Scamacca’s level) than he is Crouch. A way I think about / assess really tall players in Australian football is to think about how their games would translate if they were 10cm shorter (i.e. are they only effective due to height?). I think Lucca would still be a top flight pro at 191cm, without quite as high a ceiling but he’d likely have come on quicker

Udinese hit a wall under Sottil and couldn’t create scoring opportunities, let alone score. So it’s no surprise that Cioffi has gone with older heads in the last few weeks.

I think Lucca knows he is on the cusp. He was cracking the s***s with his teammates vs Monza who burned him badly at least twice (before he scored). It’s rare that a player is that demonstrable.

It was practically written on his face: just let me find the back of the net a few times because the rest will take care of itself.

Delofeu returns in December. That’s what I’m waiting for. Delofeu’s class and experience will be an excellent tandem with Lucca and bring him into the game even more (because he’ll be deadly working off Lucca in a way that wasn’t really an option with Beto who was more giant poacher than target man).

His contract status is complicated. Udinese gets to exercise an option. It’s hard to see them not doing so. That probably rules out a transfer at the end of the season no matter how good Lucca’s final 66% of the season is.

He’s one to watch if you follow the Azzuri. I think he’ll be in the squad for the Euros.
