CorSera: Pioli and the Milan squad’s agreement – keep winning and hope

By Euan Burns -

AC Milan coach Stefano Pioli and his players are all on the same page as to what they must do for the rest of the 2023/24 season, a report suggests.

As has been reported by Corriere della Sera (via Milan News), the Rossoneri are taking a relaxed approach to the rest of the season and everyone is in agreement as to what they must do.

Simply, they need to keep winning their own matches and hope that things go their way elsewhere. It is their job to leave no stone unturned and make sure that should there be a slip-up from the teams above them, they are in a position to capitalise on it.

The recent form from Milan puts them on par with Inter at the top of the table, and it has taken them to within one point of Juventus in second. The issue is that the Nerazzurri have been playing well all season, so they have an eight-point lead over Milan and also have a game in hand.

There is little point in focusing on Simone Inzaghi’s side, all Milan can do is maintain their own levels, ideally finish ahead of Juventus, and hope that the wheels fall off for Inter.

  1. It’s not impossible, though chances are small. We all remember last season – at this point the Scudetto was won by Napoli, but starting March their form dipped. Until round 24 they had 1 loss and 2 draws. In the last 14 matches they had +4 draws +3 losses. Yes, they were not pressured to keep winning, as all others performed very poor in the league, but obviously they had lost something in their play.

This year the gap is 8 to 11 points, we have a direct match, so Inter cannot really allow any weaknesses. I doubt they will lose the battle – they have the better performing team at the moment, but it’s not a decided title yet.

Napoli’s “dip” in form is not a good example. After 24 rounds they had an 18 point lead. By March they were already celebrating the scudetto. 18 points is a different universe to the current 8. It’s unlikely Inter will relinquish their lead, but nevertheless I agree that we have to keep going. It’s our only choice as AC Milan.
