Former AC Milan defender Alessandro Costacurta has claimed that the current Milan team is actually stronger than the most recent one to win the Scudetto.
Speaking during an interview with La Gazzetta dello Sport (via SempreMilan.it), the Italian explained that the squad Stefano Pioli has at his disposal now is better on paper than the one he used to win the Serie A title in 2021/22.
His reasoning is that there is much more quality depth in the team and different solutions that Pioli can use to various problems throughout the campaign.
“This Milan seems stronger to me than the one two years ago. The squad is much deeper, it has many solutions, and there is always someone who comes in from the bench and helps the team. Pioli has a great group,” Costacurta said.
Whilst he praises the work that the new attacking players are able to do, he thinks that the most important part of the team is actually the performances of central defenders, such as Fikayo Tomori and Malick Thiaw.
“Okafor, Musah, and Chukwueze are players who bring enthusiasm and energy. The big key to the team is the performance of the centre-backs. Thiaw and Tomori are very reliable. It is no coincidence that Milan are first in the standings and have stopped conceding goals,” the former defender said.
He also says that the next job is to make sure that Samuel Chukwueze is able to take a positive step.
“The next step for Milan is the qualitative leap of Chukwueze, an interested player. I like him, he often gives superiority even if at the moment he is further behind than his teammates,” he said.
Chukwueze plays a lot in defence, that’s why he still can’t easily score. But I think assists and goals will arrive by time how team gradually will increase in form.
That means if this team doesn’t win the scudetto, it should be consider a failure.
Lol. He is speaking about this team while the scudetto is about other 19 teams
Thank you for being more reasonably analysistical. Scuddeto is about 20 teams to play 38 matches on a level playing ground without preferencial treatment for any.
