Costacurta believes Milan should push for ‘extraordinary’ centre-back signing

By Ben Dixon -

Following AC Milan’s extensive search for a defender, the current leading option is Alessandro Buongiorno. Billy Costacurta has offered his thoughts on whether Milan should make a move for the Torino defender.

In the lead-up to the January mercato, there was extensive speculation that Milan would add a central defender to their ranks, and with Fikayo Tomori injured in the run-up, this only added another reason for the club to invest in a defender.

Reports have offered updates on the trio, suggesting that Malick Thiaw should hopefully return at the end of February, and Tomori has the potential to be back early in March, Pierre Kalulu may be out until late March at the very earliest.

Whilst Matteo Gabbia was recalled from his loan spell at Villarreal, there is a desire for another defender, and the Rossoneri’s favourite choice at the moment is Buongiorno. However, with the Italian defender refusing to force a sale and the club’s chairman, Urbano Cairo, not likely to accept a January departure, a January move is difficult.

Billy Costacurta spoke to Sky about a potential move, and his words were relayed by MilanNews.

Thoughts on Buongiorno…

“Buongiorno is really strong, he improves from year to year and is very ambitious as well as being a good guy.

“I remember that talking about him with Spalletti he also told me positive things: if he were to arrive at AC Milan it would be an extraordinary coup, also because we don’t have such young and strong defenders in Italy.”

    1. Bastoni isn’t going anywhere, Scalvini is going for a huge sum to the prem. he is kind of right that this is the time for the coup.

        1. Because I think Tomori will go in the summer. He’s been world class this season and I know Arsenal and United are after him…I’d wager so are Newcastle and Liverpool.

          1. But Mike is leaving in the summer. That’s 100% likely. Milan had the chance to offer a contract before the Growth Decree was canceled but they didn’t. That says everything you need to know. MM16 WILL BE SOLD next summer. Mark my words.

  1. @flyingturtle, I suspect he’s been told by Southgate that he won’t get regular England time until he goes back the prem..that’s the sort of nonsense I’d expect from that clown Southgate

  2. With furlani and moncada around i am sure that the project to get buongiorno will take months and months of paroli and then the guy will go to inter or juve or the premier league.
Milan management would win hands down world club championship for empty words ….. see giurassy, david, tamezi, brassier, kwior, lenglet, buongiorno ….. need any more?

    1. He also won’t be 30m in the summer. Interest will spark and we’ll be talking 45 plus. Unless we can secure something now. I’d love Scalvini but he’s going to go to Chelsea or similar for 60m plus…we should give them Colombo, Simic on loan for 2 years and 25m….it’s all well and good having limits to spending but when one player goes for above and beyond their market value, the market shifts, and your morally sound parameters suddenly land you in the no good player territory
