Galliani explains how the nature of the mercato gave birth to ‘days of the condor’ at Milan

By Oliver Fisher -

Adriano Galliani has reflected on his days as the ‘Condor’ at AC Milan, revealing some of the lessons that he has learned from decades of operating in the transfer market.

Galliani knows all about what it takes to win and achieve dreams given that during his 31-year tenure with Milan as a CEO the club won 29 major honours including 8 Scudetti and 5 Champions League titles.

However, he left the club when Silvio Berlusconi sold it to Yonghong Li and then ended up reuniting with the former president at Monza, which is the boyhood club of both and they achieved the dream of getting the team into Serie A where they are currently mid-table.

Galliani was interviewed as part of a special DAZN segment a few days before the match between Milan and Monza and he commented on his past with the Rossoneri and being in his dream role currently.

“My whole life passes in front of me, as a kid in Monza, that understood that he couldn’t play football, but that he wanted to be in this world. Not having planned to be a referee, when I was asked what I wanted to do when I grew up, I replied: ‘The president of Monza’. I never thought I could go to Milan, because Monza preceded the meeting with Silvio Berlusconi. I see my incredible life that I have lived,” he said (via SempreMilan.it).

“Over time I realised that if you want to sell, then you have to sell at the beginning of the market; if you want to buy, you have to buy in the last hours of the market. This is because a common thing that all European clubs have is to have more players than they actually need.

“We all have, some more or less, redundant players. An hour before closing you are able to bring home players that you would never have been able to have before. From this intuition the famous ‘days of the condor’ are born.”
