GdS: ‘Serious mistake’ by referee denied Milan a second goal against Genoa

By Isak Möller -

AC Milan managed to ride out the late drama in their game against Genoa and came away with all three points. However, it could have been more comfortable for the Rossoneri if it hadn’t been for a serious refereeing mistake.

Today’s edition of Gazzetta Dello Sport (see photo below) has taken stock of the referee’s performance. The alleged handball of Christian Pulisic on the goal couldn’t be confirmed by the VAR images, and thus it was right to allow the goal.

Mike Maignan’s red card for a serious four play was also correct, just like the second yellow of Genoa goalkeeper Josep Martinez. However, the referee should have let the play go on before giving the second yellow.

It was ‘a serious mistake’ by the referee, per the newspaper, as Rafael Leao and Christian Pulisic were alone against one Genoa man in the middle of the pitch. Almost certainly, they would have scored a goal.

The guidelines are that the referees should stop the game if there is a red card to be handed out, unless there is an obvious goalscoring opportunity at that moment. One could argue that Milan’s chance was exactly that.

  1. Literally what I said. Still looking for an answer for why that call was made. That’s a clear on goal. What’s worse it wasn’t to call the final whistle in addition to the card. And then had Genoa in with clear chances.

  2. The officiating was so poor to be honest… A lot of fouls against Musa were not given, If it were against other players, it would have been easy for them to be frustrated.
The card against Theo was uncalled for by the refere. The second goal he denied us was the icing on the bad officiating.

  3. Weirdest thing is, the ref blow the whistle not when the ball is cleared, but when it was obvious that Leao will gain control of the ball. That ref work very hard to deny Milan win.

    1. this exactly was the biggest issue!!!! if it was called it in the second it happened I could understand. but he watched the play develop and then blew the whistle.

  4. The official was embarrassed about the Pulisic goal. It should have been a handball during the actual play (though VAR got it correct by not seeing enough to overturn the on-field call)

The stoppage of play on Leao was to make-up for that which referees are obviously not supposed to do.

  5. The referee is between Inter fans and/or Juve fans. Seeing that Inter was previously held to a draw. and the next match is against juve. Milan must be weakened. that’s about it.

  6. Jl Pulisic goal. It should have been a handball during the actual play.

If VAR could not over turn it and they have video footage, and you think the referee should have seen it in live play, so why do you think the referee should have given it as an hand ball?.

  7. No Genoa players who were all around Pulisic thought it was a handball so what makes you sitting on the sofa watching it on TV thinks it is a handball
