GdS: The two ways Milan could use Guirassy if he were to sign

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan appear to have made the decision to focus on signing Serhou Guirassy for the centre-forward position, but how exactly could he be used?

This morning’s edition of La Gazzetta dello Sport reports that Guirassy has opened to the idea of leaving Stuttgart in the January transfer window for the right project, and Milan seem willing to pay the €17m required to sign him.

Had it not been for Harry Kane (21 goals for Bayern), the Guinea international would be the top scorer in Europe’s ‘top five’ leagues having scored 17 Bundesliga goals in 14 appearances, 13 of which were starts.

The variety of goals illustrates his technique, even if the right foot is the favourite. Guirassy doesn’t disdain from using a surprise shot from backheels and dinks to penalties and even efforts from distance. He is deadly on counter-attacks too, and can hold the ball up well.

How would Milan use him? Stuttgart mainly play with a 4-2-3-1 system but they also use a 4-4-1-1 where Undav often moved close to Guirassy, becoming the team’s second scorer with nine goals to his name.

Guirassy presses hard from the front and as mentioned his speed and athleticism make him great at leading the line on the counter, which is why La Gazzetta suggest he could play as a lone striker for Milan with Pulisic, Loftus-Cheek and Leao behind him.

However, the newspaper also suggests that the 27-year-old could even be used up front with Olivier Giroud in a 4-4-2. While it might not seem like the most obvious solution they each have different strengths to exploit.

Moreover, a two-striker formation could be something that is adopted in the post-Pioli era (Antonio Conte, for example, prefers a 3-5-2) so seeing Guirassy used in that way – be it with Giroud or a new partner – shouldn’t be excluded.

    1. Seems to me that it’s not that hard to score in the current serie A too, based on the output of another player that came from the Bundesliga in serie A this past summer.
      Marcus Thuram.
Most goals that Thuram has scored in the Bundesliga was 13 last season.
So far thru 17 games in his 1st season in serie A he has scored 7.
, on top of having league leading 6 assists. Most assist he ever had was 7.
BTW that was the only season that Thuram scored more than10 goals in the Bundesliga.
Marcus Thuram disagrees with you. Serie A is too easy for him.

      1. He played for Monchengladbach there in Bundesliga, and now he plays for Inter. That’s also one of the reasons. He also played as a sole striker there, and now he plays for a 2 forward system.

        1. Guirassy plays for even a lesser team in the Bundesliga and his numbers are higher than Thuram’s highest Bundesliga numbers.
Guirassy only had 2 less goals last season than Thuram last season, and that was Thuram best season in his career before Inter.

          1. And before that, how many goals or assists did Guirassy have per season? If I remember correctly Thuram had around 20 goals + assists every season.

          2. @Tkoje,
Last 4 seasons for Thuram and Guirassy.
            Thuram 16g 7a, 3g 1a, 11g 12a, 14 g 9 a.
            Guirassy 14g 2a, 12g 3a, 14g 1a, 9 g 1a.
Thuram has more assists because he is more of a 2nd striker/winger, Guirassy has the same amount of goals but he is a true 9.
All those people that think that Thuram would have had the same numbers at Milan under Pioli that he has at inter are lying to themselves. Thuram would have occupied Leao spot, not Giroud. Lautaro is the 9 at inter.

          3. 100% Thuram would have been way less effective under Pioli than Inzaghi. Do doubt Giurassy will be as well. Simply put, Pioli holds players back. Look at how well Calhanoglu is doing at Inter. Leao and Theo have disappeared. CDK is playing better at Atalanta (although I still think he’s overrated and we overpaid for him). Even Saladmaker is earning plaudits at Bologna. And then there are the injuries. Pioli is the common denominator here. #PioliOut

          4. It’s not about the player, though, it’s about the overall team and the manager. Stuttgart plays a system well-designed for their strikers to perform. Just look at Undav he also has some very good numbers.
You should look at the minutes played too + g/a per 90

  1. As has been said ,,it’s easier to score in the bundesliga .I think we have to able centre forwards at the moment …Yes no 1 is still Olivier Giroud,,,make no mistake about that …He will score around 20 goals in all competitions this season maybe more …So that’s not a bad return …one of the most underrated strikers in the world ,,in my opinion one of the best .
If he used correctly that is as a front man with plenty of pace around him ,,,then he then becomes the best striker in the world ..Yes as you have guessed I rate him ..I have watched him play so many times ,and I have been involved with football for a long time …problem for me is our midfield,,,it is not formidable,,,and creativity has been poor the last few games .
Coming to another plus is our other centre forward ,that is jovic …I have to be honest ,,I did not rate him at first ,but he has pleasantly proven me wrong,,,the last couple of games he has looked good ,and looks capable of scoring a few goals ..So he is a good back up to have ,for Olivier Giroud…The even better news is I think they could actually work together..
So we are fine at the moment…I think we can still end up winning something this season …We are still 3rd in the league and it’s possible we can win the Europa and coppa italia cup ..so I still remain optimistic with our coach piloi and our team..
