AC Milan are expected to part ways with Stefano Pioli at the end of the season, and it seems almost like a certainty at this point. However, who will replace the manager is a lot more complicated, and something the current management might not have a say in.
Antonio Conte has been heavily linked with the club in recent weeks but as we have reported several times, the current management is not too keen on him. Thiago Motta appears to be a more realistic profile for the time being, but a lot can change between now and the summer.
In his column for SportItalia, the journalist Gianluigi Longari spoke about the situation and stated that the current Milan management might not have a huge say on the next manager. Everything will depend on Gerry Cardinale’s plan, and on potential new owners as well.
“The real, big, puzzle is related to the Milan bench. Again, any scenario described as absolute certainty cannot be realistic. The reason is simple but at the same time complicated: the ideas and opinions of those who now occupy the seat of power could have decidedly less relevance in the not-too-distant future.
“Therefore, all the rumours and names that have emerged in the last few hours are tied to a management that might not have the same influence in the near future.
“The recent statements by Furlani, who spoke with annoyance about the media drumming of Antonio Conte’s candidacy, have in fact confirmed what was said a month and a half ago: the current CEO of Milan would not embrace that type of choice for the post-Pioli era,” he writes.
It remains to be seen what will happen in the coming months, but the one certainty seems to be Pioli’s departure. The manager has a good opportunity to end on a good note with the fans, with the Europa League and a top-three spot to fight for still.

The season is still long. The title fight may be unrealistic but a place in the C.L. is already very close. Maybe we all expected more after a lot of money invested this summer, and that’s Pioli’s problem! I have to remind you that we are still in Europe and I expect a lot from this competition.
Oh so Jerry is an expert in football coaches since he learned what is an offside a few months ago. I guess the next coach will be a banker then, we need more of them.
Translation: Redbird won’t hire a big name coach because they won’t provide the necessary transfer budget that coach would demand nor pay their large manager salary.
Not surprising.
BUT there may be hope on the horizon – IF Redbird sell a majority stake to PIF or a similar wealthy group – things could change. Let’s pray
Personally I would prefer Motta over Conte anyways – but Klopp (DREAM) above all – if we had a larger budget or not. I like his style of play and he seems like a bright innovative up and coming coach. Conte is Conte his resume speaks for itself but he tends to burn things down after 3 years and I can just see him and Ibra going at each other in practice – both fiery individuals. Anyways all for not unless we are sold. I’m sure Motta will get plenty of offers from other clubs after this solid season
Even the three years under Conte’s mentality would be good for this crop of young Milan players’ fragile psyche. Inter and Juve are arguably build on Conte’s psychological backbone.
Motta does seem like a more fitting choice for this bench. But does Milan have the luxury of improvising with up and coming coaches while Inter and Juve get stronger and stronger?
