Maldini sheds more light on Milan’s Messi pursuit: “We called, and we tried”

By Oliver Fisher -

Paolo Maldini has shed a bit more light on his previous comments claiming that he tried to bring Lionel Messi to AC Milan while he was the technical director.

During the live recording of the podcast ‘Poretcast’ earlier this month, Maldini was asked about all things Milan. The former player and director revealed he tried for ten days to sign Messi before deciding that the operation was impossible.

La Gazzetta dello Sport published a follow-up report the next day giving some background on when the Rossoneri were in for the Argentine forward, including Inter’s attempts being a driving force, but then no more information really surfaced.

Today, Maldini did an interview with La Repubblica in which he spoke at length about his exit from Milan at the end of last season, recalling conversations with owner Gerry Cardinale and his work up until that point. He also touched on the Messi topic once again, offering some more details.

“We tried to sign Messi when he was free after Barça when he left the club in August. We called, and we tried, but it remained an idea… just because Leonardo told me PSG were ahead and already in advanced talks to sign Messi,” he said.

  1. Milan should also try for Mbappe. I thought Gerry knows people, a good sponsor can pay his wages and help Milan get a superstar that will also promote their brand? 🤣🤣 They probably won’t even ask him if he wants to join. Even if it is unrealistic it is worth a shot when Mbappe is free, same like Messi.

    1. Although Mbappe is milan fan, his entourage and parents won’t agree to sign his top player of all as long as rich clubs come to beg and kneel before them 😀

      1. In the end though its not like its their decision to make so if he actually wants to join us then they cant do squat about it. Mbappe has also already earned more than enough cash for a lifetime so his decision probably wont come entirely down to the salary he will earn.

  2. Maldini gave a much bigger interview about this interview and what went down in his sacking. I totally believe his words. There’s three people who love milan as much as us fans and thats Berlusconi, galliani, and Maldini. Remember, whatever Maldini did was for the best interests of milan. To everybody else its just a job and about money. To him, it was to bring us back to our best and he would have probably done it for free.

  3. That would’ve solved our RW issues for sure haha.

But yeah, it’s a pipe dream and even though Messi would probably generates a lot of revenues through ticket and jersey sales, we should learn from Juve whose finances were ruined because of CR7.
