There have been some suggestions on social media that Tijjani Reijnders should have been giving his marching orders for a foul on Roberto Gagliardini in the first half of the win over Monza.
MilanNews recall how in the 34th minute of Milan-Monza with the game at 1-0, Reijnders – the scorer of the only goal to that point – took out Gagliardini with a sliding challenge in a clear attempt to go for the ball.
The dynamics were as follows: the Dutchman went for the ball, his right foot ‘slipped’ and ended up on his opponent’s leg. It was a potentially dangerous collision, but you immediately notice how the midfielder does everything he can to bend his leg, taking the weight off his foot and not showing his studs.
The impact was certainly hard, but Reijnders had time to take the weight of his body off his foot. The Monza players protested a lot, calling for a red card for serious foul play. Aureliano instead extracts the yellow, therefore considering the tackle from the No.14 as imprudent.
Football Regulations, page 98, rule 12. Serious foul play: A tackle or tackle that endangers the safety of an opponent or committed with disproportionate force or brutality must be sanctioned as a serious foul play.
Reijnders did not endanger the safety of the opponent because the weight of his body did not end up going through his foot and there was no disproportionate force used either.
