Pellegatti explains implications Tonali saga could have for Milan

By Euan Burns -

Journalist Carlo Pellegatti has explained the issues that AC Milan could face in the midst of former midfielder Sandro Tonali’s betting scandal.

Speaking to Radio Rossonera, Pellegatti shed some light on what the financial implications are for the Rossoneri should Tonali be found guilty of the betting offences that he is accused of.

Tonali, along with Nicolo Zaniolo, Nicolo Fagioli and Nicola Zalewski, has been accused of betting on illegal platforms and betting on football matches.

Tonali’s alleged offences relate to when he was playing for Milan, rather than his time at Newcastle which began when he left Milan in Summer 2023.

As Pellegatti explains, Milan could be set to miss out on potential performance-based bonuses from Newcastle if Tonali is suspended, but the club is cleared of any further problems.

“So, Milan only have one issue, an economic risk: They sold Tonali for a fee and then bonuses. You have to see the bonuses in that deal: if they are linked to Newcastle’s placements, fine. If to appearances or goals, there’s a risk that Milan won’t make money on it. That’s the only thing that could involve them economically, a loss of income. I don’t see anything else linking Milan to the Tonali issue,” he said.

The investigations into the four players and their alleged betting is ongoing.

  1. Football Italia is suggesting Bonucci is at risk of a ban because he knew about Fagioli and didn’t report it.

Hopefully no similar situations around Milanello

  2. what concerned Milan with bet tonali bet with his money, and also he’s not a kid.
according to report he never bet on milan

    1. “Implying” is not the same as proving it in a court of law. As far as I know, and I’ve been following this through Italian telegiornale, there is no indication whatsoever that Milan knew about it, or at least there is no proof that we did, which in a court of law is the same thing. Newcastle does not have a case against us.

And I kind of resent that here, a site dedicated to Milan fans, people keep suggesting it. Are we now doubting our own club? It’s enough that the Interisti and the Juventini often accuse us; we don’t need to self-accuse ourselves too! I prefer to assume that our club wasn’t in the wrong unless it is proven otherwise. Innocent until proven guilty!

I see the haste in selling Tonali as a necessity of the summer mercato (not to leave the signing of no fewer than 10 new players to the last moment – you saw what happened when we left the Taremi attempt to the last moment) rather than an attempt to get rid of him while knowing about this. I encourage you all to trust our own club.
