Arrigo Sacchi expects to see AC Milan return to the principles that have made them successful under Stefano Pioli when they face Newcastle United tonight.
Milan gave a very difficult task at hand if they are to keep their Champions League journey going as they must beat Newcastle at St. James’ Park and hope that Borussia Dortmund do them a favour by winning at home against Paris Saint-Germain.
In truth the Rossoneri have made life hard for themselves by winning just one group game out of five to this point – that being a 2-1 victory against PSG – while spurning good chances to record wins against Newcastle and home and Dortmund in both legs.
Sacchi spoke during an interview for La Gazzetta dello Sport that was published this morning and touched on the various Italian teams in Europe, including Milan. His comment was relayed by Radio Rossonera.
“I expect Milan to return to being a team, to play as a collective, to show a high spirit of sacrifice. It would be a notable result, after the Rossoneri have shown inconsistency in this first part of the season which has often penalised them,” he said.
I expect them to take responsibility for their fate. And this is where the experienced players must show up…Leao, Giroud, Theo, Pulisic, Loftus Cheek, Tomori…if we don’t play with heart and grit, we are doomed. They made it way to difficult for themselves by not taking the scalps of NUFC at home and beating Dortmund away…
