AC Milan’s run in the Champions League in the 2022-23 season contribution to the club’s budgets was pivotal for their mercato movements in the summer. Unfortunately, the miracle at St James’ Park was not matched by Borussia Dortmund, meaning Milan will have to go far in the Europa League for financial aid.
The victory against Newcastle United was huge for the side, and it is hoped that it can be a turnaround point for the Rossoneri’s season. Additionally, it also helps Milan financially in an indirect way. Averting a European exit means Stefano Pioli will remain as head coach, at least for now, saving the club from terminating his contract.
It is known that the figures of the Champions League far outweigh those available from the Europa League. Nevertheless, there is still money to be earned, and the Diavolo can somewhat cut their losses for not progressing in UEFA’s headline club competition.
Sky Sports Italia writes that regardless of whether the Rossoneri win the Europa League this season, they will not match the purse earned from the 2022-23 season’s European run (approximately €127million).
For their participation in the Champions League’s Group Stages, the club is estimated to have earned around €46.4m (without taking into account figures from attendances).
- Participation bonus: €15.64m
- Historical ranking: €19.3m
- Results bonus: €7.46m
- Market pool 1: €1.7m
- Market pool 2: €2.3m
- TOTAL: €46.4m
Using figures from AS Roma’s run in the Europa League last season, estimations can be made about how much Milan could pocket – should they win the Europa League (albeit figures may change due to rankings or market pools).
- Historical ranking: €3.96m
- Market pool: around €3.7m
- Play-offs: €0.5m
- Eighth round: €1.2m
- Quarter-finals: €1.8m
- Semi-finals: €2.8m
- Final: €4.6m
- Final victory bonus: €4m
- TOTAL: €22.56m
Should the Rossoneri be successful in their run to the final and then win in Dublin, the club would pocket close to €25m. This means for their performance in the Champions League and hypothetical performance in the Europa League, they would earn a purse in the region of €70m – again without including attendance figures – amounting to around €50m less than last season’s European purse.
Finally, with Milan set to miss out on the Club World Cup, it means the club will miss out on another €45m – the estimated amount given to participants.
What is the “Historical ranking”?
That’s a beautiful home jersey. I’d like to see that for next year.
Let’s not forget that the run to the semis was unexpected, and was never expected to be matched this season either. So the 50m ‘loss’ is no such thing. It was more of a 50m bonus last season.
Now lets go and win the Europa League against Liverpool.
Some people believe that run to the semis was par for the course…
