CorSport: Thiaw set to make Milan return in time for Rennes clash

By Euan Burns -

German defender Malick Thiaw is set to make his return for AC Milan in the Europa League clash against Stade Rennes on Thursday evening.

According to Corriere dello Sport (via Pianeta Milan), Thiaw has been registered in the Milan squad for the Europa League knockout round playoff against Rennes, the first leg of which will be played on Thursday night at San Siro.

He has been out injured for more than two months and the injury came at a time where he had made himself the clear starter alongside Fikayo Tomori.

He and Mattia Caldara returned to group training at Milanello this week and are now able to complete full sessions, which means Thiaw’s name will almost certainly be among the substitutes on Thursday night.

It would not be wise to start the young defender given there will be a risk of aggravating the problem, even though Stefano Pioli is going to have to use Theo Hernandez at centre-back again thanks to Simon Kjaer’s injury.

The Rossoneri will hope that Thiaw’s return is closely followed by Fikayo Tomori and Pierre Kalulu, as the majority of the season has been spent without the first-choice defence.

A recent injury to Davide Calabria means that the defence will be shuffled even more against Rennes.
