The Europa League has become AC Milan’s last real chance for success this season after another weekend in which Inter got more points than the Rossoneri in Serie A.
As highlighted by La Gazzetta dello Sport (via Milan News), Milan will need to take the Europa League incredibly seriously because the team is out of the Coppa Italia and does not look able to get back into the Serie A title race.
It is true that Milan’s form domestically has improved recently and the two dropped points after drawing 2-2 at home to Bologna is not a terrible result given the season that Thiago Motta’s side is having.
The issue is that Inter won again, 1-0 away at Fiorentina, meaning the gap has risen to eight points. The Nerazzurri also have a game in hand, so Milan could need an 11-point swing which seems unfathomable at this stage.
Qualifying for the Champions League is always something to be happy with and proud of, but this squad was expected to do more than that this season given the investment in the summer.
Stade Rennais are the next opponent in the Europa League, but there is a lot to do between now and the final in Dublin.
Do Milan ever take anything serious recently? The hunger of winning is not there anymore. Maybe one or two players will be charged up for a match but the rest give a below par performance really, especially that one who earns 7.5m. I thought the dream of being the 1st Milan team to have a second star would motivate most but as always Inter will be superior to us again and again.
Juro would argue that the reason that 7.5m player isn’t playing as he should is because the owners were too cheap to pay him more. It’s a protest. “Pay him what he wants.”
What exactly has changed since the Bologna game?
Before the game we were out of the title race and comfortably third, and after the game – a tough against a tough opponent – we are…. out of the title race and comfortably third……
Can we please stop this constant up and down. We’re not going to win all 38 games so there will be defeats, draws and wins, and we will see where end up at the end of the season.
Is that how you feel… content with 3rd place, really Maldini’s heir? Picture this for me: you are poor and all you want is €1 to buy bread but to your surprise you come across a vault with 1 million euros in it, would you just take the €1 you need or would you take everything in that vault?
That’s the same mindset Milan has, to be content with 3rd place when they have an opportunity for 1st place. Don’t get me wrong bologna are a tough opponent but come on take your given opportunity to win. Play each game like it’s a final. Keep your head down and just go for it.
I definetly think we should go for it, because we should always aim higher and try to win titles. With that said, I’m not gonna lie to myself and say it’s gonna be easy, it’s not. Atalanta, a team that has beaten us twice is in here, and let’s not even talk about Bayer Leverkusen or Liverpool.
Many Serie A teams have gone weaker this season, so it seems the third place is secure (for the moment at least), so we can rotate in a way that will allow us to use the best available players in Europa League.
