AC Milan have now begun their pursuit of a centre-forward who has an EU passport given that they are advancing in talks over Samuel Chukwueze, a report claims.
This morning’s edition of La Gazzetta dello Sport (seen below) writes that Milan held talks with Villarreal over Chukwueze and are now more confident about closing a deal at around €25m, one that would see him take the final non-EU spot.
That means Mehdi Taremi cannot arrive as the striker, so the management are now looking at alternative options for that role who can arrive and give a hand to Olivier Giroud, who will turn 37 this year.
Gianluca Scamacca is an idea as per the paper, like other possible loan deals from the Premier League, but it seems that the Rossoneri want to sign a centre-forward on a permanent deal who can grow.
Noah Okafor of Red Bull Salzburg is on the list, but he costs quite a bit despite the fact he has less than a year on his deal, in addition to their being doubts about him playing as a lone striker.
Another interested idea has emerged: Vangelis Pavlidis. He has been at AZ Alkmaar for two seasons and has an asking price of €15m, which is within reach.
Pavlidis scored 56 goals and registered 25 assists in 131 matches in the Eredivisie and scored nine goals in AZ’s Conference League run last season too, which has attracted Milan’s attention.
If they thought Pavlidis was the right player, I think they would have made a move for him already. I still think a loan signing will make most sense for this year and invest properly after a year of planning and research next season. Scamacca would obviously be my first choice now Icardi isn’t an option, but no doubt some other opportunities will open up on loan as other teams acquire players.
I think we’re being stupid in not giving Origi a proper pre-season though, there’s a fair chance we’re not going to be able to find a huge upgrade on him with the budgets we’ll have left after spending in other positions.
I tend to agree on both points. This is probably Giroud’s last season as first choice (he’s great but he’s no Ibra) so I think a top class replacement should be priority next summer. I would loan in adequate cover this year, and sign them as adequate cover next year if they work out. However…
I’ve said on here before, out of all the ‘dead wood’ if we have to keep someone, keep Origi. He has proved he’s a good player and a big game player too.
Obviously he had a torrid first season and he looked completely useless when coming short for the ball or in a deeper role, but in theory he wouldn’t have to do that now. To be honest I’d be more than happy if we kept Origi and Colombo, and invested more elsewhere.

Question: How is Okafor an EU option ? He is Swiss. Switzerland isn’t part of the EU. I looked him up and he doesn’t seem to have any other passport that would qualify him as EU.
It’s a bit complicated, but long story short – Switzerland is part of the EU’s single market (along with other non-EU countries like Iceland, Liechtenstein, and Norway), despite not being a member of THE European Union. I think this is the reason why such a transfer wouldn’t count as an external one, although I’m not 100% sure.
There’s a few countries technically not EU that often count for people. I think in Italian legal sense, Swiss, Norwegian, Lichtenstein, Vatican, Andorran, San Marinese, Monégasque and maybe some others are included.

Pretty sure his ban is cross competition based but he would also be a non eu player and with chukwueze in the crosshair to sign for us it wont happen.
