Matteo Gabbia has been crucial for AC Milan since his early return from Villarreal in January, performing at a very high level. This has obviously not gone unnoticed by the management, with a renewal now in the works.
Ahead of the current season, Milan decided to send Gabbia to Villarreal on a season-long loan. It was certainly the right decision at the time, with the Italian in need of more playing time. However, due to the injury crisis, the Rossoneri had to recall him in January.
The 24-year-old has made eight appearances since and has been brilliant in almost all of them. In three games, he has been rated at 7 or higher (7.5 two times) in our player ratings and was even named the MOTM against Udinese.
In short, Gabbia has impressed since his return and according to MilanPress, Milan are now working on a renewal for the academy product. His current deal will expire in 2026 and he earns just €800k per year, with a salary adjustment long overdue at this point.
The Rossoneri are expected to initiate talks with Gabbia’s entourage in the coming weeks, with the idea of renewing his contract until 2028. Gabbia himself has made it clear that he wants to fight for a spot at Milan, the club in his heart.

We had two clean sheets in the last two games. Part of our defensive improvement is thanks to Gabbia who has been impeccable. Once our two starters for CB are fully healthy (Thiaw and Tomori) we have an embarrassment of riches: who to start among these 3 (or 4 with Kjaer – the latter being experienced and able to organize the defense; we win more often than not when Kjaer is playing, but he is slow due to his age and is not suitable for games when we face opponents that have fast young forwards). I would like to see Tomori and Gabbia starting, with Thiaw and Kjaer backing them up for depth. It’s hard to fix what is not broken, so benching Gabbia once Thiaw is back to 100% physical form and Tomori returns, doesn’t seem like the right move. Gabbia’s spectacular form after his spell in Spain is like a new signing; he’s definitely starting material if he continues to play at this very high level.

But you can’t argue he don’t deserve the new increased salary – imo 1,6-2,5 m/year is well deserved.

He has been solid, and would be a good addition to the squad. But I doubt that he can lead a back 4 of top 16 CL team. I also have my doubts on Thiaw tbh, but I see more potential there. A top top CB would do wonders for the squad
Thiaw is 22, Gabbia is 24. Relax, with good amount of playing time and continuity they will improve. Also, a champion figure in the Milan board would be beneficial for mentality aspect. After all, this is milan policy on how to build squad. Young and promising.
Totally deserved. Needs to learn some leadership skills from Kjaer and we have an absolute asset on our hands
