TMW: Milan targeting a high-level defender and striker – the names

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan had a quiet end to the January transfer window, but they are already planning a couple of big additions in the summer window according to a report.

Niccolo Ceccarini has given an update on TMW and he claims that Milan are looking to sign a high-level central defender and a striker, and that they will be the two main operations for the summer.

Regarding the former, the Rossoneri have already set the wheels in motion after opening talks with Torino for Alessandro Buongiorno.

The offer also envisaged the inclusion of a counterpart like Lorenzo Colombo but in reality there was never a real opening on the part of Urbano Cairo.

However, the Milan management are ready to go back in for him at the end of the season but they know that it will take a big offer to prise him away from the Granata.

There is no shortage of ideas for the centre-forward position as well. Santiago Gimenez from Feyenoord has also been added to the long list of players under observation, joining Joshua Zirkzee, Jonathan David, Benjamin Sesko and Serhou Guirassy.

The Mexican is having a great season so far with 19 goals in 19 appearances plus four assists in the Eredivisie.

  1. Complete stupidity to look at the Eredivisie for a striker. The last great forward to come from that league was Ibrahimovic. Zirkzee is Serie A proven. He could lead the line for many years.

    1. I wouldn’t say complete stupidity, but you have a point. We should prioritize strikers playing in more competitive leagues before looking at Giminez or Pavlidis, but they shouldn’t be discounted completely.

      Zirkzee
      Sesko
      Giurassy
      Gimenez
      Pavlidis
      Lucca

In that order. Forget David, he’s not what we need. I’d also add Lorenzo Lucca of Udinese. He is an interesting profile and Italian. If he keeps scoring he will be in the mix for the Nazionale.

  2. Kristiansen at Udinese is a player to keep an eye on as a left footed CB.

He started slowly but he has really come into his own in the last few weeks. He is much more dynamic than he initially appeared, as he has adapted to the pace of the senior game.

He’s about 2m tall, a really big boy, but he’d be as agile and athletic as Buongiorno. He’s good and potential really good with the ball at his feet.

I also really like the idea of Okoli. An Italian born 191cm CB of Nigerian dissent. He’s basically Tomori, with those punishing physical characteristics, that knows how to or has at least been taught how to properly defend.

Could sign the next Buongiorno and Tomori before they cost Buongiorno and Tomori money…and unlike every target we are linked with, other than Buongiorno, they know the Serie A.

  3. I’m also going to make a case for Lorenzo Lucca.

His body of work is starting to look extremely good.

He ia 201cm who as a striker is something between the technical ability of Peter Crouch and the physicality of Djuric or Koeller/Janker.

He is deceptively quick, I’d say almost Beto speed. Not Thuram-quick by any stretch but those long strides really eat up the ground (see his opening shot v Monza). He has a bigger build than Crouch and is already pretty physical, not Djuric but he’s also 23 and still maturing. He will get much stronger and more dynamic/powerful.

His hold up play was really good when he wasn’t scoring in the first few months of the season, then he started scoring and his overall game declined. To my eye he started taking up higher positions, almost poaching. It’s also been a tough slog playing for Udinese so far this season.

He hasn’t really put it all together yet. On reflection, that should not come as a surprise. It’s his first full season of playing in the top flight. In fact, it’s basically the first season he has played as the starting 9 the whole time. He played limited minutes even in Serie D and Serie B, and basically didn’t play for Ajax seniors.

He was really good in the game he just played against Monza, even displaying the ability to strike with genuine power from distance (something I had not previously seen). It was a very complete performance without the scoreboard impact.

I think he ends up the new and improved version of Luca Toni, better technically and physically/athletically. He doesn’t strike me as being capable of the spectacular of Ibra (at all) or even Scamacca or Sesko but he has 3 or 4 extremely solid tricks that convert to scoring and excellent hold up play.

Unfortunately I don’t think we can get him without paying top dollar. I assume Udinese has exclusive rights to buy and won’t then sell straight away. At this rate I don’t think we’ll entertain the price in summer 2025
