AC Milan are braced for offers in the summer transfer window from elite European clubs for Mike Maignan, and they have set a daunting initial asking price.
This morning’s edition of Tuttosport has a segment dedicated to the difficult moment that Maignan is experiencing given that he has made some uncharacteristic errors in recent weeks and of course there was the racism incident in Udine.
The paper (via MilanNews) then put forward some reflections on the issue of his contract renewal. Maignan receives a salary of €3m net per season and his deal currently runs until 2026, so there is no urgent rush but still the desire to take steps forward.
The goal is to try and agree a renewal by the summer but it is clear that an economic effort is needed, also because from the first discussions it emerged that the player’s entourage have big demands.
His agents made a first request of €8m net per year while Milan consider Rafael Leao’s €7m net including bonuses to be the current ceiling.
In all this, Bayern Munich as the leading suitors should not be forgotten because they are looking for a replacement for Manuel Neuer despite his recent extension.
Obviously Milan would like to keep Maignan but if an offer of €80m or more arrived, it would be difficult not to at least come to the table.
Milan should capitalize on selling Mike Maignan and Leao this summer. Rebuild the team and bring in a coach with a winning mentality like Conte who rebuild Juventus and Inter into the team they are when they dominate Serie A.
Rebuild with whom? Maignan and Leao are among the best in the world. It is very hard to find replacements for them. They sold Tonali but the ones who were bought to replace him are far from high quality.
Exactly. IF it was so easy to sell and replace players with the same caliber of players and WIN TITLES – everyone would be doing it.. BUT it is NOT and teams that want to WIN TITLES do NOT do so. They build and ADD to their core. They don’t sell core players each summer and replace them with young unproven talent or older vets with mixed history. That is the mentality of a club like Atalanta – a “FEEDER” club – not a big club (or what we once were) like Milan with our history.
So many fans are lost on this forum. They have drank the Redbird kool aid. Ya let’s just keep selling our star players each season and replace them with cheaper and younger alternatives that may or may not develop. And when they do – sell them again and repay the cycle over and over = Atalanta model. We will never win TITLES that way. Ya we can make top 4 and compete – just like Atalanta – but will never win titles – just like Atalanta. I get some offers you cannot pass up (175m?) and especially if the player is asking for a salary not sustainable in Italy or WANTS to leave. Then we may have to sell at that point. BUT if a player is asking for a top salary in Italy and IF his performances justify it and the market dictates it – then we should grant it IF our goal is to win TITLES. However, if we are interested in just making top 4 and qualifying for UCL and just competing – then hell just sell everyone to the highest bidder and bring young players and develop and then sell again – just like ATALANTA.
Sad so many “fans” on here are screaming to sell and automatically assume Gerry will use the $$ from those sales back into strengthening the squad. We shall see. We also saw so far this season it hasn’t worked too well. Didn’t even qualify for the UCL knock out stages after making the semifinals year before and are slowly watching Inter get #20 before us. Just Be careful what you wish for gents
@Juro all facts bro. I figure that was why Maldini was fired. he understood the value of a trophy and winning, the image it projects. Hence why he’d prefer to hold on to players ….sign Ibra which they didn’t want btw, same with Tonali ..who they reaped the benefits of anyway, wanted to keep Kessie and so on.
The current crop only understands the value of money with the second thought being the aforementioned. Very quick to sell. And in an ideal world we should really be somewhere in-between.
Your team sold Onana who was the best GK in the UCL last season and you replaced him with Sommer for 10% of what you sold Onana for and yet your defense is even better this season, best in Europe.
Also, your team sold some of your best players over the last 4,5 years and they were all replaced. Icardi, Lukaku, Hakimi, Brozovic, Onana, even your biggest Primavera talent Casadei. Seems to me you are doing just fine by selling your best players and replacing them with either “young unproven talent or older vets with mixed history.
Everyone is replaceable and Tonali was replaced with 3 players who are each on the same level as Tonali was.
Tonali is better than them, that is not up to debate. Inter are performing well because the rest of the league is quite weak. In the CL we finished behind Real Sociedad. Some of our players are performing well but are in their 30s, some others are young but not qualitative enough. Sommer is 35, Onana in his 20s so they can’t be equals in value. If Lautaro or Calhanoglu gets injuried, we run out of fuel. Selling top players on a regular basis might look smart in the short term, but is not in the long term.
“If Lautaro or Calhanoglu gets injuried, we run out of fuel.”
Oh wow , you want to tell me that if the 2 best players on any team get injured that team will be in trouble? No way.
And Tonali being better or not than someone is absolutely up for debate. We saw 37 years old Dzeko send him to the stands in last years supercopa vs your team. That was one of many occasions Tonali looked bad.
Sommer and Onana who would you rather have? Ask ManUtd fans. Their ages don’t matter. A fact is that inter defense got better with Sommer and ManUtd defense hot worse, no one thought that was possible, with Onana.
Stop trolling Inter Fan. Tonali was hugely overrated and Milan did great business selling him and bringing in 3 players for that price. Tonali had already lost his starting spot at Newcastle by the time he was suspended.
The ones we bought were better than Tonali. Tonali really wasn’t anything special in his last season with us. We reinforced our entire team with minimal loss. Whereas your team is still registering massive financial losses. Inter fans are something else.
The “minimal loss” is that Milan made weak performances and got eleminated in the group stage in the CL, got eleminated in the Cup and can’t even dream of winning the Serie A. Tonali at least tried hard, the current ones look lazy to me. Barcelona are in a deep financial crisis but they are not willing to sell their core players, even though they have their highs and lows on the pitch. Why? Because to gradually build a strong team you need to keep a core of key players or if you sell them buy players who can become high quality ones. Apart from Pulisic, the others can’t.
Milan was in the group of death and finished on equal points with PSG.
Last season Milan was in the easiest group .
Milan got eliminated in the cup last season as well with Tonali to a 10 men Torino.
Milan couldn’t even dream of winning serie A last season as well. They had the worst title defense ever until Napoli said hold my beer this season.
Matter fact Milan has better chance to win serie A right now than they did with Tonali last season. They are only 8(11) points behind your team, while last season they were over 20 points behind Napoli.
People need to stop over rating Tonali.
Also, the players Milan has loaned this season and Pobega if sold could make 50-60 mln. Milan could have sold them instead of Tonali.
Exactly…”ones”… Because it took more than one to make it make sense lol 😂
Name a single player that was clearly better for the role he played? Puli is a winger btw. In combination we got volume and most likely 2 or more are better than one…but even that I’m not even sure…
“We reinforced our entire team with minimal loss. Whereas your team is still registering massive financial losses”. Stop embarrassing yourself as a Milan fan. yes I’m sure they and everyone will look back at 2023-24 and think of the massive financial losses and not the second star. Just as much we look back at 2003-2007 and think about the losses we had and not the 2 UCLs and CWC we won 🤦♂️ /s
You’re the one who wanted to sell Mike and replace him with De Gea. Please excuse yourself out the door lololol
Anyone else notice that all the succesful maldini signings are having a bad season. They all doin wut needs to b done to b sold cus they dont want to b at milan under this current clown ownership 🤡
Yep, everyone risks their integrity, career, professional development, because someone they liked was sacked from the team. This has never happened anywhere in the world.
Now they don’t know what to do with their lives, because he is still unemployed. I heard Theo is looking into the social services in Italy as he considers retiring and wants to have some income while cleaning Maldini’s house for free…
How dumb do you have to be to believe something like this? These Maldini fanboys just can’t get over that he got sacked, so they have to make this stuff up. And they especially hate that the new signings have been doing well.
29 years old
For this money, we have to sell Mike. I think he wants to leave too, especially after what happened in Udine
What happened in Udine – some random jerks making racist remarks and noises, some of which obviously were black as well and just wanted to get in his head… Yep, he wants to move to Dreamland, where no one can be mean to him.
I forgot there was no occasional racist cases outside Italy and that in fact in other countries the ultras try to accommodate opposition goalies as best as possible.
If he decides to move on it will be a strategic decision 1)to improve professionally, 2)monetarily and let’s not forget about ego – in the next couple of years at least Milan won’t be a top club winning many trophies. To be recognized as the best goalie, he needs to be a part of a winning team. If he feels his current team is dragging him down, even a bit, then it makes sense to move on.
Though on the last bit, I would add this season he is not exactly outperforming the rest of the team. By the way what bullsh** reason is the age of 29 – he can still be absolute top quality for at least 7-8 seasons easily. Age is not that big of a factor for GK, look at his deputy Giroud.
Most of the sale proceeds will be used to repay debts
I fear this is going to be a long summer. Another year zero. Gone will be Rafa and Mike. In will be Lukaku and the terrible Conte plus another 4-5 players.
Maignan out for 60-70 mil.
Di Gregorio and Boungiorno in for around the same money.
Excellent replacement for Neuer, but in Bayern tradition also must be the no. 1 GK it’s from Germany player. Milan should capitalize this summer at least for Leao and Maignan if they failed with the proposal. They must learn from the past like Kessie, romagnoli and hakan FOR FREE.
If Milan wants rebuild with young player and for the long term, they should coach Gasparini.
A rebuild like the one we had these past few years, providing key players like Théo, Bennacer or Leao that won a Scudetto and went to UCL semis? Leao signed an extension this very past summer but don’t worry he’ll be sold long before the end of his current contract.
Sell Leao if someone pays the clause.
Bring in Xabi Alonso to develop this team before richer clubs take him.
Maignan is not too old to be a goalkeeper. He is one of the best players in our team.
The only player who should be considered unsalable is Theo. Anyone else can be replaced
I guess Bayern haven’t seen his goalkeeping this season. It’s been quite bad of late. Factor in that he misses months at a time with injuries every season, and it makes sense to sell.
The fact that Mike is 29 isn’t a deterrent. GK’s last longer than other players. I doubt Milan would sell Leao and Mike in the same window. But if Leao is sold this summer then technically RedBird can afford 7mil for Mike. The issue is, what does it say about a club where a GK is the top earner?
I just don’t see Mike making anything over 5-6 mil at Milan… There are pretty decent GK’s available for pick up, DiGregorio being one of them. And on principle Milan might offload Mike if his entourage continues to ask for high dollars, which MIKE ABSOLUTELY DESERVES.
His dipping form this season doesn’t take away from the fact that he is still a stellar GK. You think Buffon never gave away cheap goals? All the best GK’s have – it’s just occupation hazard.
I’m curious to see how this summer plays out. If I were to guess, I’d say Leao leaves before Mike.
I got bored reading all the arguments. I remember when we lost donnarumma… And tada! We got maignan. We can sell if we need to. We’ll find another decent keeper. Like the argument of with tonali. Yeah its a shame but look at him now. We would’ve lost him for the season. Still missing a kessie or tonali but have three decent mids from tonali sale. They still need a bit of time yes but didnt tonali. Ah yes he did. And we need another mid still like a gattuso/ambrosini/tonali/kessie. But hopefully we find them this time in the summer. Leao with his three goals or something like that is not a loss if he goes. Yeah hes doing alright with assists. But 150/175 million sale! Yes please. Lets get someone who helps defend. Hes got a bit better recently with that. But it annoys me watching him stand or stroll about. Old giroud works harder than leao for the team haha
