Recently there has been a push from some top Serie A clubs to try and have the size of the league reduced from 20 teams to 18, but this was voted against today.
It was reported last week that managements of Inter, Juventus and Milan met in the offices of the Nerazzurri club’s headquarters in Viale della Liberazione in Milano and agreed they would push for the size of the league to be reduced.
The belief of the three clubs is that there are too many fixtures, especially given that from next season there will be new formulas for the European competitions and the Club World Cup every four years, plus of course international commitments for the best players.
According to what is being reported by Calcio e Finanza, a Serie A assembly was gathered today and they voted to maintain the 20-team format as opposed to reducing the size of the league.
Only Inter, Juventus, Milan and Roma voted in favor of the 18-team format, while the other 16 clubs they voted to stay at 20 teams.
“The Lega Serie A approved today, during the Assembly held at its headquarters in via Rosellini, its policy document containing the proposals for the reform of Italian football,” reads the note from the League at the end of the assembly.
“During the same meeting, the absolute need to maintain the right of agreement in the federal statute was reiterated, as is the case in the main European football systems. Furthermore, the current 20-team format of the Serie A league was confirmed.”
Terrible for Serie A. 20 team leagues only increase the mediocrity at the bottom of the league. Serie A was at its peak when it was an 18 team championship.
