CM: Milan will sanction Baretsaghi loan deal when a new defender arrives

By Euan Burns -

Milan will sanction a loan deal with Monza for Davide Bartesaghi once they manage to get a new defender through the door in January, a report claims.

As has been reported by Calciomercato.com, the Rossoneri do not want to allow any defenders to leave the club this month until they have added at least one new central defender to the squad.

Even though Bartesaghi is a full-back, Theo Hernandez has been having to fill in as a centre-back which means that they need players to take up his normal left-back role in that situation.

What is clear is that without more injuries in defence and the emergence of Alex Jimenez as an option on both flanks, there is less scope for Bartesaghi to get minutes during the rest of the season.

That is why Monza have shown an interest in giving him somewhere to play for six months, like they have done with Daniel Maldini who joined them on loan earlier today.

Milan are trying to sign at least one central defender but they missed out on Radu Dragusin as he has chosen to sign for Tottenham in the Premier League. When a new defender is signed, Bartesaghi may depart on loan.

  1. With Terracciano being able to play all defensive roles, Jimenez for left, Florenzi, Calabria, Kjaer, gabbia, Theo and simic we should should be good until in of the other cbs comes back, let him leave on loan and get some experience

  2. This is crazy. We are giving playing time to a Madrid owned player, who will be bought back if he performs well, for a nominal fee that is worth less than the experience and development opportunities we are providing their asset. We are also loaning away our player who showed he can play for us. This decision is questionable.

10 million for two years of playing time in a top league, to improve the defensive game of Jimenez’ he wouldn’t be able to develop in Spain is nonsense. I would return him to Madrid or renegotiate the buy back term before even considering this loan to Monza unless they garantee David gets playing time.

Wish washy player management at it’s best again.

    1. When we consider the fee to buy him and the amount they can pay to buy him back, the difference is about 5 million euros. This is not enough to compromise our asset’s development.

  3. I agree with the general sentiment that Bartesaghi should be developed as a CB.

His attributes appear to me to be better suited to being a CB, possibly even in the mould of the pseudo-midfielder when the side has the ball (see Calafiori).

I initially thought that is what was on the cards with this loan. But on review, Monza doesn’t seem to have a natural left sided full back / wing back on account of injury and long term suspension. I suspect he will get a pretty quick look on the left.

Either way, he needs to be playing. Hopefully he ends up with at least 1,500 minutes playing for Monza. Interestingly, Monza is replacing the Carboni brother who is a left back whose loan has been terminated (and who is now on loan in the Serie B) with Bartesaghi. Hopefully that is a sign that they really rate our guy.

We’ve seen it with Maldini, you don’t want to be the 18 year old who is good enough to sit on the bench for the senior team. It’s horrible for development in key formative years. He needs match time. The season would be a disaster for his development to date if it wasn’t for international appearances which account for 5 of 6 matches of game time.

The question now is how many players are we going to sign which make it virtually impossible for Bartesaghi to realise a career as a Milan player. Hopefully sense prevails.
