MN: When goals are not enough – Giroud becomes Serie A assist king

By Ben Dixon -

Olivier Giroud’s AC Milan future remains a muchly coveted topic, and whilst there are arguments for both sides of the debate, his impact is still being felt by the club at a high level.

As MilanNews writes, this season he has played 2043 minutes so far, with this number likely to reach the upper 2000s, if not even 3000, given there are still 15 matchdays left to play in Serie A and, hopefully, a route deep into the Europa League.

With this, the striker is also on track to have his best season of goalscoring in Italy, with him scoring 11 goals so far this season and on track to finish the season with nearly 20 goals, should he continue at the same rate.

Alongside this, he currently leads the Serie A charts for assists this season, as he got his ninth of the campaign with his header to Matteo Gabbia in this weekend’s victory against Frosinone, proving himself to be more than just a goalscorer.

The situation is clear about his future. Milan like the idea of the Frenchman staying for another season, but only if he accepts a bit-part role within the squad.

Giroud is open to another deal, but only if his playing time is not massively lessened. The ball is firmly in the court of the veteran striker, and there will be no qualms about his decision should he seek other challenges.

  1. Giroud, who is about to be 38, is the only Milan player who has improved his production and performance every year. No one else. All that with barely receiving any service.

  2. I’m with Milan’s idea – bit part role next season. I’m grateful to him but if youre first choice striker for a club like Milan it should be normal contributing to 20 goals at this stage. He’s likely to drop in strength at 38 so to be reasonable he should accept a bit part role or understandably go to MLS. You can tell he’s still hungry and I specially love his discipline and passion

    1. I’d like to see Milan get a more efficient replacement with such a figure that there would be still be money left for LB & new starting midfielder. I’d also like to see Calabria lift the scudetto & EL trophies in May but perhaps those two have better chances of happening than the Giroud replacement thing… 😛
