There is an abundance of speculation surrounding the future of Mike Maignan at the moment, and the AC Milan management are attentive to the goalkeeper market.
Corriere della Sera (via MilanNews) reported yesterday that the goalkeeper wants €8m net per season to renew his current deal which expires in 2026. Given he earns €2.8m per year, it leaves the management with a decision to make, and Carlo Pellegatti confirmed this request is true.
According to Tuttosport (via PianetaMilan), it cannot be ruled out that Milan reach a contract impasse with Maignan and are forced to cash in on him, given there should be no shortage of interest from top European clubs.
Who could replace him? Michele Di Gregorio, who is doing very well with Monza, is a name on the list. Several clubs in recent weeks have sent their scouts to the U-Power Stadium to watch him closely, such as Newcastle United who have been impressed by his performances.
Napoli and Milan are keeping an eye on him in the event of the departure of Meret and/or Maignan. Tuttosport claims that it would take a €90-100m bid to make the Rossoneri think about selling the Frenchman, however.
Last year, the agent of Di Gregorio revealed that his client grew up a Milan fan but is dreaming of a return to Inter more than anything, the club where he feels he has unfinished business.
Even 50 million for Maignan, would make good sale for Milan.
Mike is really one of the best keepers, but Milan is more confident in scout team and selection. Even Sportiello made some great impression this season, so for about 20 million in transfer fee plus 3-4 million net salary, Milan could make another perfect signing.
Yeah why a football team would want to keep its best players haha let’s sell all of them and play Russian roulette again and again hoping to find a good player in the bunch.
Mike is great but I’ve never seen a goalkeeper have as many lower body injuries in 25 years watching football. If they can get 4-5x what they paid (52m-65m) for him, it would absolutely be a good deal. I don’t want to pay 8m net a season for a keeper who routinely misses a month of playing time every year.
He misses in two and a half seasons he’s missed 25 league games. That’s bonkers for a GK.
Also a huge evidence that Milan should do something about it. Mike was not injury-prone prior to his time here. Actually, just looking at his history, he was only injured in 2016 (113 days, shoulder) before being in Milan and sustaining four different injuries.
We had 25 injuries so far this season, second in Europe is Manchester United with 13. What an absolute nonsense that nothing has been done yet.
Bartholomeo may have a point that this has more to do with our overall injury situation than it does with Mike’s specific injury history.
Maybe, maybe not. Correlation doesn’t necessarily equal causation. Plus he’s not an outfield player, so it’s hard to imagine Pioli’s high intensity style or lack of rotation affects his position.
Only if we agree that the only one issue for all these injuries is “Pioli’s high intensity style or lack of rotation”. There must be some problem with preparation, training. MilanLab is now infamous for years for breaking players (Pato, El Shaarawy, De Sciglio, Montolivo, Bonaventura, Pazzini, Calhanoglu, Conti). Pato explained in 2013 how they derailed his career.
Anyway, there are two possibilites:
1. Maignan has suddenly became injury-prone after sustaining only 1 injury in his entire career before Milan
2. We had 25 injuries this year (ManU 2nd in Europe with 13) and we have problems with that for many seasons, and Maignan is one of the players suffering from this team issue
nah just let him go for free in 2026 like Maldini would do, keep his legacy alive
50M is not good at all. If Fukkking Kepa was 80M brah.. Mike is way above what Kepa ever was
😥😥😥
Even if Milan wanna sell Maignan, which they should based on his salary demands, there is no way they are getting 90-100 mil.
The teams that are in position or crazy enough to pay that much money for a GK are not in need of a GK.
ManCity, ManUtd, Chelsea, Liverpool, PSG don’t need a GK.
I read that Ten Hag isn’t happy with Onana so they are trying to sign a new keeper.
PSG is trying to bring Maignan back and is even willing to offer Donnarumma in swap deal.
Bayern Munich needs a long term replacement for Neuer, so they are eyeing Maignan.
Ten Hag pushed for the Onana signing. But, even if Ten Hag is unhappy with Onana, they are not going to spend 90-100 million on a GK after they just spent 60 on Onana.
As you said, PSG will offer you Donnarumma in a swap deal. So you are not getting 90-100 mil, and Donnarumma makes 12 million a season. He’d have to agree to at least 60% pay cut to come back.
You are right that Bayern will need a GK, but Bayern isn’t a club that will pay 90-100 for a GK.
All good, and I believe accurate, points, except for Bayern, who btw I consider the best run club in the world. Bayern has been increasing the amount they spend on certain signings. There was a time when they wouldn’t go above ~50m on a single player, but they’ve been topping that the last few years. They spent 80m on Lucas Hernandez and 95m on a 30 y/o Harry Kane, 67m on De Ligt. Not sure they would spend 100m on Mike, but Mike might not be worth that much if he’s not renewing and the pressure is on to sell to avoid a steep cut in 2025 or a free transfer in 2026. I think a range of 60-80m is going to be the more likely, and I think Bayern would be in the hunt at that price.
But overall your point holds, in that at 80-100m there isn’t much of a market for Mike, and the club will have to reduce price (assuming this current valuation is even true) if they can’t find an agreement him to avoid losing him for free.
Chelsea and Man United will pay 90-100m to Maignan.
Milan should sell him for nothing less than 70m. Then we can reinvest in strengthening our squad with more quality. Bulka from Nice is an excellent goalkeeper and younger than Maignan.
Chelsea don’t need a GK lmao
this guy thinks Robert Sanchez is any good, he isnt even better than fking Sportiello
I hope Milan recruit Carnesecchi replace Maignan if Maignan left
Lol, Carnesecchi will come most of what we make from Maignan. Conversely, I think the other Atalanta GK, Musso, might be a good option. He will have a year left in his contract in 2024, and with Carnesecchi pushing him for time, it might be a good solution for all parties and at a pretty cheap price. He’s a good GK and could hold down the spot for a few seasons until something better comes along in the market or from the Primavera. I do also like Di Gregorio and there’s also Mamardashvili.
DiGregorio is an excellent prospect – he’s having a great season, last game especially was nuts. I just hope he is consistently that good.
Do we know if Lapo has long term potential?
You all are just big bunch of fools wanting the club to sell maignan for a news that is not even real.
Just a media speculation.
An talking about maignan’s injury, do you all think he’s injury prone. i know so many of you here just biased fans.
Please if nobody have anything positive to talk about maignan’s renewal situation should just shot you mouth. the club is not selling rather they will negotiate and come to a conclusion.
Useless Milan fans everywhere always talking trash.
So they should offer maignan 8mil and cause an uproar amongst other high earning players.
And every talk here is speculation. No one is talking about really selling him. Reading and comprehension, especially comprehension is a needed tool.
Before hurling insults at people you don’t know over speculations.
If anyone offers $80M we must sell. His salary demands mean he WANTS to leave. He knows we can’t afford to pay what he wants. Also his injuries are a liability. With the money we can strengthen our decimated defense and won’t even need the absolute best goalie. Sportiello is good and we can buy a young Italian or a very affordable Polish keeper (for some reason they have so many there)
Di Gregorio will be signed by Inter, where he had his youth career, and then assume the #1 mantle from Sommer in a season (when Sommer will be 36).
Carnesecchi is the guy to sign. Hasn’t yet established himself, so you’re not paying that premium, but has shown he is a first rate shot stopper. He was remarkable for Cremonese last season.
There was a recent game during which his distribution wasn’t great. Watch Atalanta’s game against Fiorentina when his distribution was excellent.
I think he can he can be an all round keeper and world class.
It’s going to end up being Donnarumma plus 10-20m for Mike.
Plot twist, Maignan to United, Onana to Milan….
