Abate assesses dropped Milan Primavera points: “The lads lost some confidence”

By Euan Burns -

AC Milan Primavera coach Ignazio Abate has shared his thoughts on the 3-3 draw against Sassuolo in which the Rossoneri threw away a three-goal lead in the closing stages.

Speaking to Milan TV after the match (as seen below), Abate lamented the fact that his team was able to produce one of their best performances of the season but they were not able to get all three points.

Milan were 3-0 up at half time with Francesco Camarda scoring twice, but three goals from the 84th minute onwards for Sassuolo meant thatthe points in Milan were shared.

Abate explained that they had full control of the game but then the first goal back seemed to shake the confidence and then it all unravelled.

“I really liked the team for the first 45 minutes, maybe we had the best first half of the season. In the second half we started controlling the game, we didn’t really suffer, we were always in the game. We shouldn’t have conceded that first goal before the end, then the lads lost some confidence and that’s what happened,” Abate said.

Despite the game ending 3-3 from such a position of strength, Abate chose to remain positive and focus on the control Milan had for most of the game, especially considering that Milan’s team is much younger than most in the division.

“I’m taking a positive outlook, we played a very high-level game for the first 45-60 minutes, we played against a team that was much older than us, five of them were 2005-born, we finished with a lot of 2007 players,” he said.

Reiterating his earlier points, Abate wanted to stay as positive as possible and questioned whether he could have made his substitutions at a different point in the contest.

“I don’t know if I could have timed the changes better, but eight minutes from the end, what happened happened. It will make us grow. It will be a great experience for them and for me, we’re taking the positive side of things. It’s a shame because it was a tough point for the table but we have to look at our growth. It’s right that the younger players understand what they need to play in this league, the games end in the 95th minute. We will be able to manage certain situations better, with more maturity,” he explained.
